The seychelles
The Seychelles Archipelago derives its name from the French Minister of Finance, Vicomte Moreau des Séchelles.
Some historians believe that the Phoenicians and the Greeks visited the Seychelles in ancient times, However, the first navigators known to have recorded Seychelles were the Arabs.
Arabs
The old Arabian manuscripts of the 9th and 10th centuries mention the name "Al Khadra" (the green) or "Al Dabaran" (the Five Stars in Taurus) linked to Aldabra. This is the largest atoll in the Seychelles group that has been donated to the world by the people of Seychelles as an UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Arab historian, Al Masudi, in his work makes reference to the "high islands beyond the Maldives ", which is most probably a reference to the mountainous group of the Seychelles . The works of Majid-Al Nadji named the Seychelles "Zarin", meaning ‘The Sisters’.
Getting Around
Independently operated taxis are available on Mahé and Praslin, and a handful on La Digue. You can hail one from the street, at designated taxi stands or by simply phoning a driver directly. Most taxi don't have a working meter. It is good to negotiate and agreed on a quote prior to a trip. Many drivers will take clients on sightseeing tours for a set tariff.

About Seychelles
The Republic of Seychelles comprises 115 islands occupying a land area of 455 km² and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.4 million km² in the western Indian Ocean. It represents an archipelago of legendary beauty that extends from between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator and which lies between 480km and 1,600km from the east coast of Africa.
Of these 115 islands, 41 constitute the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands on earth while a further 74 form the low-lying coral atolls and reef islands of the Outer Islands. The granitic islands of the Seychelles archipelago cluster around the main island of Mahé, home to the international airport and the capital, Victoria, and its satellites Praslin and La Digue. Together, these Inner Islands form the cultural and economic hub of the nation and contain the majority of Seychelles’ tourism facilities as well as its most stunning beaches.
